Orthopaedics and maternity services NOT being axed — MGH manager

Rumours have been mounting in Mayo General Hospital and across the county in recent weeks that maternity and orthopaedic services are to be axed from the hospital.

However the hospital management completely refuted the stories that have been circulating locally and stated that there is absolutely no basis to what they described as “unfounded stories”.

Manager of Mayo General Hospital Mr Tony Canavan told the Mayo Advertiser: “Our maternity services have gone from strength to strength in recent years, with the numbers of deliveries rising every year, including in 2008. Our orthopaedic services have also continued to develop, with the numbers of inpatients and outpatients benefiting from our service rising every year.

“We will shortly be issuing our Annual Report for 2008 and our service plans for 2009, and these will give a clear picture of all that was achieved at Mayo General Hospital in 2008 together with our plans for 2009.”
