This week saw planning permission granted by Mayo County Council for a new €5 million IDA building in Castlebar. The new building will be located on the Moneen Road in the town on a site that is already fully serviced and owned by the IDA.
The new building was part of a number of capital projects announced by the Government earlier this year as part of its Regional Action Plan for Jobs. It is expected that work on the building will begin in the next few months and it should be ready for use by late 2016.
Taoiseach, Enda Kenny welcomed the news saying,
"I am delighted that this project has got the green light from the county council and expect it will move swiftly from here. The IDA already own the site and I understand it is fully serviced and ready to go from a structural point of view.
"The facility being built here is a 2,500 sq m facility - incorporating 1,500 sq m open space (Production space ) and 1,000 sq m office space.
"I expect ground to be broken on this project in the coming weeks with an anticipated build time of about 12 months. The project will require approximately 80 construction jobs during that period."
He continued saying, "This news today is good news for our county town and has the potential to attract up to 300 high quality jobs upon completion depending on the industry attracted. I have spoken with the IDA and I understand they will market the building on a cross-sector basis to multinationals predominantly in the Life-sciences, ICT, engineering and services sector. However this may also attract an Irish firm seeking expansion and is not confined to FDI companies.
"The building forms part of the Regional Action Plan for Jobs - the Western version of which will be launched by Minister Bruton in the coming weeks. The IDA is rolling out a 5-year €150 million capital investment programme to help attract more multinational jobs into each region. Mayo is one of the areas targeted."
