Fine Gael Leader Enda Kenny TD has warned that the price of affordable housing units needs to fall in order to maintain the previous gap that existed between affordable housing units and the normal property market.
Deputy Kenny has been made aware of some situations in other counties where the concept of affordable housing was non-existent as there was little difference between market and affordable prices.
Dublin County Council has slashed its affordable housing unit prices by 25 per cent in order to reflect the dramatic changes in property prices in recent times.
Dep Kenny said the Mayo County Council should follow suit by making an appropriate reduction in the cost of its affordable housing and the Minister for State with responsibility for Housing, Michael Finneran TD, should take direct action to address this matter. “The people waiting to receive an affordable home are sick of waiting and want action from the Minister such as instructing local councils what action to take,” was Dep Kenny’s advice.
