A community group in Ballinrobe has applied to Mayo County Council for planning permission to develop a state-of-the-art, €1.5 million, town hall facility.
The group plan to develop the new facility, which includes a 400-seater auditorium, on the site of the old town hall on the Neale Road.
The plans were finalised with Ballinrobe-based chartered architectural and planning consultant Donal McCormack, following a lengthy public consultation process.
Other facilities at the town hall will include meeting and changing rooms, kitchen facilities, WC rooms, an impressive foyer, and on-site parking.
“We are very happy to be at this stage," said the town hall committee chairperson, Michael Sweeney.
"It is a vital step towards realising our aim of building a new hall for Ballinrobe.
"Hopefully, we will get planning permission soon and this will allow us to move on to the next phase of the project, which will involve accessing public and private funding."
Ballinrobe has been without a purpose built town hall for a number of years. The old town hall was closed and eventually demolished in 1999 for safety reasons.
