A four-year-old boy was fatally injured in an accident on a farm in north Mayo on Wednesday night.
The accident, which involved a tractor and trailer, happened at around 8.20pm on Wednesday evening on a farm in Ballinaboy, Belmullet. The boy was visiting family in the area ahead of a family wedding, the child was named locally as Declan Donoghue.
The boy was rushed to Belmullet District Hospital shortly afterwards and was pronounced dead a short time later. A post-mortem was due to take place on his body yesterday at Mayo General Hospital.
The scene was preserved for a technical examination and two separate investigations were started into the incident one by the Gardai and the other by the Health and Safety Authority.
