Camino walk for hospice

Mayo Roscommon Hospice is looking for participants for this year's Camino Trek 4 Hospice challenge. The trek will take place from Saturday October 3 to Saturday October 10. The minimum fundraising target for the trek is €2,500, assistance in fundraising can be obtained from the hospice office in Knock. The trek will be fully supported by a licensed travel agent who specialises in Camino de Santiago tours, this year's trek will be taking the Portuguese path on the Camino. Ballinrobe bat walk and talk

On Thursday August 6, Ballinrobe Tidy Towns will be hosting a walk and talk where you can learn more about bats that live in the Ballinrobe area. Dr Kate McAney, of the Vincent Wildlife Trust, will tell you all you ever needed to know about bats and will then lead a walk along the Bowers where you will listen out for bats (using special equipment ) and watch for bats feeding along the River Robe. The walk will meet at the Tacú centre, waterproof footwear and a torch are recommended for this walk.

Introduction to computers and career planning course

This course is designed for unemployed people in order to provide the fundamental computer competencies needed to search for and apply for jobs. Training will be provided in essential internet skills such as setting up an email, web browsing, and Microsoft Word. One-to-one support will be provided to individuals in order for them to meet their education, training, or employment needs. The course will take place in the Foxford Sport and Leisure Centre, starting on Tuesday July 28. The course is free to qualifying applicants and placed are limited and booking is advised. Storytelling in Achill

The Top Drawer and Pantry in Keel, Achill, will host a story telling event with Jane McDaniel who will regale everyone with stories of strong Irish men and women on Saturday August 8 from 6.30pm to 8.15pm. The stories range from ancient Celtic myths to rollicking stories of the 1950s, and will be in English. This event is suitable for all ages from six years up. Admission costs €3 or €5 for two. Jane is an internationally acclaimed and prize-winning Irish storyteller.

Boeh Stone walk

The Croagh Patrick Heritage Trail is hosting a guided walk and talk to the Boheh Stone on Monday August 24 at 7.30pm, go and witness the amazing "Rolling Sun". Immerse yourself in Mayo’s pre-historic culture and view the Boheh Stone, a unique Neolithic feature. The townland of Boheh contains this remarkable example of prehistoric rock art. The Boheh Stone dates to the Neolithic are (4000-2500BC ). The stone can be found along a narrow side road, hidden away behind a derelict house and unkempt vegetation, it is a large natural outcrop of rock known as  St Patrick’s Chair. Join local archaeologists to hear about this site and (weather permitting ) experience the amazing “Rolling Sun” phenomenon. This is a moderate walk of 2km and is open to everyone, meeting and registration at Brackloon Community Centre at 7.30pm. The Brackloon Community Centre is situated 7km outside Westport on the Westport/Leenane road (the N59 ). Family Fun Day at The Crossroads Cong

The heritage village of Cong is hosting its first Family Fun Day at the new community centre, The Crossroads. The event will take place Sunday July 26 from 2pm to 6pm and will be a summer celebration for all, young and old. Lots of exciting attractions will include bouncing castles, pony rides, Fanzini Brother show, cake sale, and archery. The Crossroads is acknowledged as one of the finest community centres in the county. It is a source of real pride for everyone in Cong, and for a community to have pulled together like this in terms of fundraising and a shared vision is a true triumph. The fundraising efforts have been well supported and now the Family Fun Day at The Crossroads is a chance for everyone to celebrate their achievements together and at the same time invite people from all over Mayo to enjoy a wonderful afternoon and see the new jewel in Cong's crown. St Colman's Garden Centre Féte

St Colman's Care Centre féte in Keel, Achill, will take place this Sunday, July 26. The events will roll onto Monday, with Bingo in the Marquee also promising to be an exciting event. The féte will be used to provide essential funds towards the operating costs of St Colman's Centre. A packed programme of fun and entertainment for all the family is guaranteed at next Sunday's féte, with all the usual attractions, wheel of fortune, bric-a-brac, tombola, books, arts and crafts, cake stall, to mention but a few. There will be quality seafood, boxty, barbecue, and high afternoon tea. The fete begins at 2pm and patrons are asked to co-operate with stewards for parking, to ensure easy and safe access for all and minimal delay to traffic. Vehicles can gain access via the main gate to drop people off up to 3pm.

Gospel concerts

A trio of special Gospel concerts will be taking place in Achill and Belmullet over the next few days, things will kick off this evening, Friday, in the Achill Sound Hotel at 8.15pm. On Thursday next, July 30, the venue for the concert will move to Ionad Deirbhile Heritage Centre in Eachléim, with the concert moving to the Boradhaven Bay Hotel in Belmullet, with special guest Graham Murphy appearing at both concerts in Belmullet. Admission to all concerts is free.

Cash for clobber at Ballina FRC 

If you are clearing out your home drop the clothes, shoes, bags, etc, into the Ballina Family Resource Centre, Abbey Street, Ardnaree, which is holding a Cash for Clobber as a fundraiser for the centre. All support is greatly appreciated. For more information call (096 ) 75573. If you need bags there are some in the centre, just drop in and collect them.

Drumming workshop

This September the Maple Youth Centre in Ballinrobe is running a drumming workshop for children aged seven to 12 years. The course will take place on Thursday evenings from 4pm to 5pm and it costs €5 per class. For more information contact (087 ) 7714967. 

CoderDojo

There are many ways in which you can volunteer with your local CoderDojo, whether you are technical or not. The Maple Youth Centre in Ballinrobe is looking for technically skilled mentors to help out, for a couple of hours a week, helping share their knowledge with local young people. Community horticultural project

Growing Locally CLAR IRD's community horticulture project at Mayfield, Claremorris, is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm. The project is located opposite the Clare Lake entrance, volunteers are encouraged to join each Friday at 11.30am for talks on food and gardening. For more information call (094 ) 9371830. 

Crossmolina Hospice dance

Crossmolina Hospice Support Group is holding its 15th annual dance on Friday July 31 in Hineys Upper Deck in Crossmolina. Dancing will get under way at 10pm and admission is €10 with proceeds going to local hospice/palliative care services. For more information call (094 ) 9388666.
