There is a new act attracting lots of attention at Claremorris Town Hall.
But the action is all happening in three small nesting boxes rather than onstage
The nesting boxes have been installed at the town hall in a bid to help halt the steep decline of the swift population in Mayo.
According to Lynda Huxley, Swift Conservation Mayo, the swift population has declined by almost 50 per cent in the last 20 years, mostly due to the loss of nesting sites when old buildings are renovated.
The new nesting boxes are equipped with a device to imitate a bird call to entice swifts, which are a close relation of the hummingbird, to breed there.
Cllr John Cribbin recently performed the official switching on of the attraction call.
The new nesting boxes bring to 14 the number of such sites around the county as part of the Swift Conservation Mayo project.
