Castlebar ready to open its 'heart' this weekend

This weekend, all roads lead to Castlebar as the Heart of Castlebar returns to the town for its fifth installment tomorrow, Saturday July 4.

On the day the streets of the town will become a pedestrian shopping mecca, with stalls, events, and entertainment for all the family to enjoy and shop in.

There will be plenty of music, heritage events and children's entertainment in the heart of the town. From 10am tomorrow morning, Main Street and Castle Street will transform into a outdoor market and cultural area for everyone to enjoy.

Also taking place in Castlebar this weekend is the 48th installment of the Castlebar Four Day Walks, where up to 700 walkers from all around the globe will descend on the town to take part in the event which kicked off yesterday morning and will run right through until Sunday.

Each day of the Four Day Walks there will be three walks daily, a 10km road walk, 20km road walk, and the famous 30km cross country ramble. The walks are non-competitive and open to all.

The festival will conclude with the Blister Ball in the Welcome Inn Hotel.

Also taking place tomorrow is a memorial for all the Mayo born soldiers who served and died with the American armed forces during World War One, World War Two, the Korean and Vietnam wars.

Tomorrow July 4, is American Independence Day.

A special ceremony will take place at 6pm, which will see the unveiling of a memorial in memory of Corporal Joseph A Clancy, a Westport man who died during the Vietnam war. A newly revamped American memorial will also be unveiled on the day.
