Ballycroy National Park, which is one of only six national parks in the country, comprising 11,000 hectares of Atlantic blanket bog and mountainous terrain, will see a number of improvement works carried out on it in the near future.
The Government has sanctioned €220,000 to purchase lands at Srahduggan which will be used to facilitate, improve, and safeguard public access to the park where a number of enhanced trails and walks are being planned.
Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring welcomed the funding for the park, saying: "The acquisition will provide dedicated unhindered public access to Ballycroy National Park, allow for the development of recreational and educational facilities to enhance the visitor experience and, by extension, improve visitor awareness and appreciation of natural and cultural heritage in the west of Ireland, all of which are desirable in view of Fáilte Ireland’s commitment to promote the national park as a signature experience on the Wild Atlantic Way.”
He concluded: "I am delighted to see Ballycroy National Park being developed and extended in this manner. It will provide a wonderful opportunity for locals and visitors alike to experience this fantastic facility."
