For the sixth time in five years the Mayo senior ladies will set out on the road towards league and championship action with a new manager at the helm. Following in the footsteps of Michael Ryder, Frank Browne, and Charlie Lambert in the last few years is Tuam native Kevin Reidy. Even with the upheaval in management over the last two years the Mayo players have managed to pull through and claim two Connacht titles, a national league title, and make it to an All Ireland final. So Reidy knows that he has the talent at his disposal to make a serious challenge for honours this year.
Experienced players sticking with it
However Reidy will have to plan without the services of Claire O’Hara who retired from inter-county football this season. The Castlebar Mitchels player who was captain last year has past number of seasons been blighted by injury and hasn’t been able to maintain her fitness to hold down a regular place in the side. However there are still a large number of star players who will be lining out for Mayo this year, with Cora Staunton, Fiona McHale, Claire Egan, and Martha Carter all signing up for another year in the green and red.
Mayo are playing in Division 1A of the league this year alongside Tyrone, Laois, Donegal, Armagh, and Kerry. They open up their account for this season in Strabane on Sunday at 2pm and they entertain Kerry on February 15, Donegal on February 22, make the visit to Armagh on March 8, and then finish up in Laois on March 15.
