Majority of Mayo GPs sign-up for free under six care

Some 78 per cent of Mayo GPs, 66 in total, have so far signed-up to provide free GP services to children under six.

Children under six will now get free GP services from July 1.

Deputy Michelle Mulherin (FG ) described the number of GPs who have already signed-up to the scheme in Mayo as "a very good start" and added that there is still time for other GPs to take part.

Deputy Mulherin said free GP care for young children may also help in the fight against childhood obesity.

“Early identification of health issues at a younger age can reduce the impact of ill-health later in life and as one in four children in Ireland are overweight or obese, this is especially relevant when it comes to detecting illnesses that may be coming down the road," she pointed out.
