Piers at Old Head, Blacksod and Ballyglass are to receive €285,00 in total funding as part of a national programme for the repair and development of piers and harbours, An Taoiseach Enda Kenny has announced.
“This is really good news for the communities in the three areas," the Taoiseach said. "In total €1.6 million in State funding has been allocated to the Local Authority Harbour Development and Marine Leisure programme. I am delighted that Blacksod Harbour will receive €60,000 while both Old Head and Ballyglass will receive €112,500 each.
"The funding at Blacksod Harbour will be used for repairs to the slipway and gangway, structural repairs will be carried out on the existing pier at Old Head and the money for Ballygass will be used to provide new crane and ancillary facilities to support fishing industry. This funding, for the repair and development of piers and harbours, is crucial for ensuring their long term sustainability. Our fishing, marine and tourism industries depends so much on this infrastructure around the coastline of Ireland."
