Clare Island lighthouse part of new tourism initiative

Clare Island's historic lighthouse has been included in a new European funded tourism initiative launched on Wednesday.

The Great Lighthouses of Ireland features 12 lighthouses in stunning coastal locations and aims to offer visitors an "unforgettable experience" highlighting the maritime and seafaring story of the island of Ireland.

The project aims to reinvent each of the 12 individual lighthouses as visitor attractions and unique self-catering accommodation so that the lighthouses can contribute to local communities in terms of visitor spend and tourism employment.

Clare Island Lighthouse has been a nautical landmark in Clew Bay for almost 200 years.

The Great Lighthouses of Ireland project is supported by the European Union’s INTERREG IVA cross-border programme.
