Ten new beds are to be opened at Ballina District Hospital at the start of next month.
That is according to Ballina based Dáil deputy Michelle Mulherin who said she received confirmation from the HSE that eight beds will be open by June 1 and a further two will open over the following week or so.
"New staff have been recruited which will see six nurses, two multi task assistants, and two health care attendants in situ at the hospital for the opening of these beds," said Deputy Mulherin.
"At least five beds will be high dependency and the remainder will be medium dependency."
The new beds are expected to relieve pressure on Mayo General Hospital and facilitate earlier discharge, potentially reducing the number of patients having to wait on trolleys there.
