A team of robot warriors from St Gerald’s College, Castlebar, have won a national ‘robot wars’ competition.
The students, Barry Chambers and Kirrell O’Dowd, called their robot creation Mel Gibson and were crowned national winners at the recent Irish Robotics Championships in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Galway.
The competition, supported by EA Games, pitted rival robots from schools across the country against one another to battle it out for two titles - the Mini Sumo and the Line Follower.
Team Mel Gibson were victorious in the Mini Sumo competition.
St Gerald’s put in another impressive performance on the day in the Line Follower competition, when a second team from the school, with their robot The Speedster, made it into the final but were unfortunately defeated by a Dublin school.
The Irish Robotics Championships is supported by the Department of Education under its EXCITED initiative, which aims to integrate technology into education.
