Six groups in Mayo have secured funding for heritage projects in their areas, under a national community grant scheme by the Heritage Council.
The Mayo grants total €12,700 and will help to fund a diverse range of projects, from coastal grasslands conservation work in north Mayo to dry stone wall repairs in Mulranny.
Birdwatch Ireland is responsible for the grasslands conservation project at Termoncarragh and Annagh, which are important bird habitats, and has secured €4,000 towards the work there.
Mulranny Community Futures will use a €1,500 grant to develop a weekend workshop repairing traditional dry stone walls in the vicinity of Mulranny’s Greenway.
Mulranny Community Futures secured a second grant of €1,000 under the scheme for a ‘geo design’ project.
The group, Comhar Dún Chaocháin Teo, has been granted €2,000 to help develop a book on the habitats, flora, and fauna of Cill Chomáin in Erris, while Kevin Barton has secured a grant of €1,200 for his Schools Archaeological Remote Sensing (SARS ) project.
He plans to work with national schoolteachers and pupils and use kite aerial photography to explore archaeological sites and landscapes.
The Humbert Heritage Committee in Ballina has been granted €3,000 to go towards carrying out a conservation report on the Military Barracks in Ballina.
