Strong scoring in the sunshine

Balla

Jimmy Sheridan was the winner of the Gift Supreme sponsored gents’ competition with a score of 38pts. His back nine place held off the challenge of Steven Walsh who also finished with a score of 38pts, with Fenton Barrett coming home in third place. The ladies’ competition was won by Mary Conlon who scored 39pts, Patricia Conwell finished in second place with Nora Gibbons coming home in third spot. Gibbons also scored a hole-in-one on the fourth hole.

Ballina

The Captains’ Drive Off competition was won by Cian Buttler with a score of 43, Eddie Harney finished in second place one point behind with Brendan Kilgallon finishing in third place with a score of 39pts.

Ballina Golf Club will host the Mayo Pink Ribbon golf classic this coming Friday and Saturday, April 24 and 25. This is a major fundraiser for breast cancer and will feature team and society prizes, longest drive, nearest the pin on all par threes, best individual gross, top ladies’ team, and much, much, more. Ballinrobe

Last Friday’s open competition was won by Aled Roberts with a score of 34pts, Seamus Holian was the other qualifier with a score of 32pts. The gents’ weekend 18 hole competition sponsored by Vaughan Shoes was won by Richard Dooley, the gross prize went to Daniel Merrigan, with category prize wins going to Peter Staunton, James O’Gorman, and Noel Galvin. The front nine competition was won by Declan Flaherty with Adrian Flannery winning the back nine. The ladies’ 18 hole weekend competition was won by Geraldine Ryan with a score of 37pts, Helen Ryan finished in second place, Aine Melville finished in third place, while Mary Daly finished in fourth. The front nine competition was won by Joanne Hynes and Terry Mullen won the back nine competition.

Ballyhaunis

Rory O’Connor was the winner of the McGarry’s Clothing sponsored competition with a score of 39pts. His back nine scoring saw him hold off Tom Halliwell who finished in second also with a score of 39pts. Third place went to Alex Eaton and the junior prize to Jason Meehan. The ladies’ competition was won by Margaret Dyer with a score of 43pts, Anne Freeley finished in second place five points further back.

Castlebar

The fine weather over the weekend raised the scoring in both men’s and ladies’ competitions which were sponsored by Dunnes Stores. Paddy Grogan scored 42pts to win the men’s event closely followed by Michael Connaughton on 41pts. Dom Molloy came third with 38pts. Maeve Nevin was the runaway winner of the ladies’ event with a great score of 41pts with Breege Flynn on 36. In the men’s county cup played in Ballyhaunis on Saturday, Castlebar finished with 210pts with the host club on the same score. Neither could compete with the winner Achill golf club which racked up 219 in the 10 team competition. Noel Burke with 40pts finished second in the singles event.

Claremorris

Last weekend’s competition sponsored by Phelan Motors was won by Pat Kelly who finished with a score of 37pts, the category one win went to Peter Coen, with Matt O’Donovan winning category two, Ronan Gurren category three, and Eoin Prendergast claimed the category four win. The ladies’ competition was won by Marie Healy with a score of 39pts, Nuala Moran finished in second place, with Chris Rushe taking third place, and Bernie Egan won the nine-hole competition.

Mulranny

Owen Gallagher showed a welcome return to form when shooting 41pts to claim the weekend stableford competition, sponsored by Holmes Plant Hire, David Ryder was second on 40pts, with Colin Cooney finishing third on 38pts. Next week’s stableford is sponsored by Todd O’Reilly, PGA Professional, Westport, and you may play on Saturday or Sunday. Entries for the club fourball match play championship close on Sunday next, April 26. The ladies’ Saturday stableford competition was won by Maureen Walsh with a score of 31pts, Saskia Eland finished in second place with Margie Coughlan taking third place.

Swinford

Last weekend’s Morrisroe Cup competition was won by Michael Rowley with a round of 62. Kevin Quinn finished in second place five shots further back with Pat Marren finishing in third place. The gross prize went to Richard Ingham. The seniors’ competition was won by Rob Thornburgh with Frank Duffy finishing in second place. The Betty Casserly Cup was won by Anne McNeela with a score of 27pts, Catherine Loftus finished in second place with Patricia Feeney coming home in third place, and Marian Thornburgh coming home in fourth spot.
