Two men removed from council chamber

Two members of the public were removed from the council chamber in Mayo County Council on Monday before a Civic Reception was awarded to the US Ambassador to Ireland, Mr Kevin O’Malley.

The two men were among a group of people who had been in the chamber for the monthly council meeting that took place that afternoon. That meeting had been adjourned shortly after 5pm ahead of the civic reception which was an invite only event. The men were spoken to by gardai for a number of minutes and asked to leave on a number of occasions, but failed to do so. There were a number of councillors in the chamber at the time of the incident.

The men were then individually removed by gardai from the building. A short time later the US Ambassador arrived at the building in the company of An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, for the reception which was part of a number of engagements this week in the county for Mr O’Malley, whose grandparents came from Westport.
