A fortnight after claiming a historic win in the Connacht Junior Cup, Westport will go looking to claim their second piece of silverware this season when they take on Ballinasloe in the final of the Cawley Cup this evening, Friday, April 17 in Galwegians home ground, Crowley Park at 6.30pm.
Last Sunday, Westport booked their spot in the final with a win over Monivea in Carrowholly. While the Cawley Cup doesn’t have the prestige of the big cup Westport won the week before, the Bulls still went about their business with professionalism last Sunday. They ran out 19-5 winners, with Dylan Carpenter touching down twice, and Chris Ryan crossing the whitewash for a third five pointer, in their 14 point win over the side they had beaten in the Junior Cup final the previous weekend.
Ballinasloe claimed a Mayo scalp in their semi-final win over Ballyhaunis a fortnight ago when they ran out 29-16 winners, and they will be looking to end the season with something to show for their efforts. In the league, they finished in third place in the table, four points in front of Westport at the end of 14 game series. When the teams met in the league earlier this season Ballinasloe drew first blood with a 11-9 win in east Galway in September, and when they met for the second time in late November, the Galway men had three points to spare in a 11-8 win in Carrowholly. Both sides have been very try happy in the league with Ballinasloe touching down for 22 tries and Westport 24 tries in the league. A entertaining game looks to be in store for those who make the trip to Galway this evening. The Bulls will be confident of adding a second piece of silverware to sideboard to shine over the summer.
