The announcement by Minister for Environment, Alan Kelly that he has sanctioned Mayo North East Leader Partnership to approve funding for four projects in the area, was welcomed by Government TDs this week. The three projects are: €301,499 to Comharchumann Forbartha Ionad Deirbhile Eachleim Teoranta to renovate Naomh Bhreandain Community Hall in Eachleim, Blacksod. €177,350 for the development of a commuity centre in Attymass. €167,635 for the completion of phase two of the Bonniconlon Community Centre, and €150,334 for the Swinford community recreation centre.
Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring, said: “This funding represents a very significant investment by this Government into rural areas in Mayo. These projects will now go back to the board of Mayo North East Leader Partnership for final approval. This is in line with the EU’s ‘bottom-up’ approach to rural development.”
Speaking about the renovation to Naomh Bhreandain Community Hall in Eachleim, Blacksod, Minister Ring said: “The hall which is over 60 years old will now benefit from the installation of a heating system, new windows and doors, and the internal layout of the hall will be modified so that improved services and facilities will be available to the community. Funding for the project is being provided under the Basic Services for the Economy and Rural Population measure of the Rural Development Programme 2007-2013.”
Fellow Fine Gael TD, Michelle Mulherin said: “I am delighted with Leader funding announcement of nearly €900,000 for four community centres in Mayo, namely Bonniconlon, Attymass, Swinford, and Eachleim. The various voluntary community groups involved have been working on these projects for a good number of years. By their considerable efforts and perseverance they are ensuring that the place where they live can avail of the opportunity for funding under the Rural Development programme to improve the quality of life for people by providing basic services through the provision of community centres in their communities. I was delighted to work closely with most of these groups and make their respective cases to Minister Alan Kelly for his approval.”
