Mayo has low claim rate

The people of Mayo are far from the most litigious.

New figures released by the Injuries Board show Mayo has one of the lowest personal injury claim rates in the country.

The Injuries Board said it awarded 221 claimants in Mayo a total of €6 million in compensation last year.

The personal claim rate in the county is the fourth lowest in Ireland. However, the average personal injury award in Mayo was €27,012, significantly higher than the national average of €22,642.

The Injuries Board is the independent State body responsible for making personal injury awards to claimants who have had a motor accident, workplace accident or an accident in a public place.

National, Limerick, Longford and Louth had the highest claim rate per head of population
