Big Nirvana tribute in store at Garbos

It is a case of back to the nineties next weekend in Garbos Castlebar for Finbar Hoban Presents...Territorial Pisssings, a tribute night to the late great Kurt Cobain and Nirvana on April 4.

The night will comprise of local bands and artists including Ireland’s definitive Nirvana tribute act Negative Creeps.

Kurt Cobain took his own life on April 5 1994 and left a world of music fans in mourning.

Nirvana changed the landscape of music and catapulted the Seattle grunge scene onto a world stage.

When ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, from the band’s second album Nevermind, became a global hit, Nirvana popularized alternative rock, as a whole, and the band's frontman Cobain found himself referred to in the media as the ‘spokesman of a generation’.

The group came to be considered as the ‘flagship band’ of Generation X.

In response, Nirvana's third studio album, In Utero, featured an abrasive, less-mainstream sound and challenged the group’s audience.

The album did not match the sales figures of Nevermind but was nevertheless still a commercial success and met with critical acclaim.

Nirvana’s brief run ended following the death of Kurt Cobain in 1994, but various posthumous releases have been issued since, overseen by former band members Novoselic, Grohl, and Cobain’s widow Courtney Love.

Nirvana was inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, in its first year of eligibility.

The upcoming Garbos concert will pay a fitting tribute to Nirvana, Cobain and their legacy on the eve of the 21st anniversary of Cobain’s death.

Tickets for this very special night will go on sale shortly and will be available through Downtown Records and Hogs Heaven in Castlebar.
