Drink driving conviction for man who reversed into car

A man who reversed into a car in a car park was convicted of drink driving at Castlebar District Court on Wednesday.

On responding to a complaint, gardaí arrived at Tesco car park, Castlebar, at 12.40pm on May 13 last year where the vehicle driven by Patrick Hopkins, 61 Rowan Drive, Castlebar, was observed to have reversed into another car in the vicinity. The defendant was arrested on the suspicion of drink driving with a blood analysis subsequently showing 93mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood.

According to defending solicitor Aidan Crowley, Hopkins, who has no previous convictions was drinking the night before the accident and even though he was in bed the night before at 2am there was still alcohol in his system when he drove to town to go to the post office. Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined the defendant €200 and disqualified him from driving for one year.
