Westport Covey Wheelers CC is holding the Ras Mhaigheo two day event this weekend, kicking off tomorrow, Saturday March 14, and continuing on Sunday March 15. The Ras Mhaigheo has evolved from a single day event to one of the most popular stage races in the west. Its success over the last few years has been confirmed with sell out numbers and large teams entering high profile riders.
This year the defending champions Lucan CC are back with a huge team of 12 riders, Local squads from Castlebar CC, Western Lakes CC, and the hosts Westport Coveys will do well to contain Orwell Wheelers, UCD CC, Nenagh, and Rossbury Racing who are all coming to Westport this weekend with their big hitters on board.
With the Ras Tailteann coming to Mayo for three consecutive days in May this year’s Ras Mhaigheo will be a preview to cycle racing on the same routes as those proposed for the toughest cycle race in Ireland. While there may not be the testing climbs as in Kerry the exposed routes along the Wild Atlantic Way will ensure that the riders and spectators are in for a spectacle. The race headquarters will be located in the Leisure Park, James Street, Westport.
