Last weekend’s round of 32 in the Connacht Junior Cup was hit by a number of postponements due to the weather around the province, but two Mayo sides did manage to book their places in the next round of the competition.
Conn Rangers booked their place with a 2-0 win at home to fellow Mayo League side Glenhest Rovers, with Shane Bourke and Owen McNamara hitting the net for the Newsboys in the Super League this season.
Iorras Aontaithe had a tougher afternoon when they made the long trek to Drum in Galway to take on Salthill Devon. The game finished 2-2 after extra time. The north Mayo men trailed twice, but goals from Garrett O’Donnell and Brendan Nallen hauled them back on terms each time. The contest finished level at 90 minutes and there were no more goals in extra-time, so it was down to penalty kicks to decide the outcome. Shane Nallen was the hero with the Iorras custodian saving one penalty and scoring another, with Séan Gaughan scoring the winning spot kick to send Iorras through to the next round.
Moy Villa were the other side in action in the competition last Sunday and the Attymass outfit will want to forget about this one as quickly as possible as they were beaten 14-0 by Athenry.
Both of the two big names in the Mayo League, Castlebar Celtic and Westport United, saw their games against City United and Galway Hibs respectively called off. Ballyheane’s round four game against Strand Celtic will go ahead on Sunday in Quigley Park at 2pm.
Westport and Ballina collect masters titles
Westport United were crowned the Mayo League Masters division one champions last week, with Ballina Town collecting their division two trophy and gaining promotion to the top level of masters soccer for next season. The action now moves to the Masters Cup competition.
