Work to start in April on Bonniconlon water project

Bonniconlon residents are expected to have a safer, cleaner water supply by the end of the year.

That is according to Mayo Fine Gael TD Michelle Mulherin, who said this week that construction work on the new €960,000 Ballina to Bonniconlon public water supply scheme is expected to start in April.

Deputy Mulherin said the network upgrade project will facilitate the decommissioning of Bonniconlon WTP and provide a safe and secure drinking water supply to over 500 people in the area.

The project is to be delivered by Mayo County Council.

“Programming of the works is under way and works on the ground are anticipated to commence in April 2015,” said Deputy Mulherin.

“The works are scheduled to be completed by December. The scheme involves the upgrade of the existing water main on the Quay Road, Ballina, which will facilitate the supply to Bonniconlon. In addition, the works involve the laying of some 2km of water main, the upgrade of the pumping station on Behy Road, and the de-commissioning of the existing pumping station on the Bonniconlon Road.”

“The extension of the scheme to Bonniconlon will provide the village and surrounding areas with a high quality water supply, which will support economic growth and facilitate new development, while also preserving environmental and water quality standards. The scheme will guarantee a high quality secure water supply to the village and the surrounding group schemes as well as contributing to the security of the Ballina town supply.”
