Ballina is to stage its own one-act drama festival for the first time later this year.
The Amateur Drama League of Ireland has given the festival the thumbs-up and, while the exact date is yet to be announced, it looks likely curtains will go up on the event in November.
The festival is expected to attract drama fans and groups from all over the west of Ireland to the town during what is otherwise a very quiet time on the events calendar.
“It will give a real boost to our hotels, B&Bs, pubs, and restaurants in Ballina,” said local Dáil Deputy Michelle Mulherin.
“With the long-standing standing tradition and love for amateur drama for many decades in Ballina and surrounding areas, it is most fitting that we should host a drama festival in the area at last, and that Ballina Arts Centre and Theatre, our very own community arts venue, should be the focal point for the festival.”
