Frank Browne’s Mayo ladies made it two wins from three last Sunday when they saw off the challenge of Dublin by five points in DCU.
Cora Staunton was once again the star of the show with the Carnacon superstar kicking 11 points for Mayo in their 0-13 to 0-8 win against the Metropolitans. That win puts Mayo into second place in the table after three games, one point behind fellow westerners Galway who have won two and drawn the third of their three games so far.
On Sunday in Swinford, Mayo will host Tyrone at 2pm and Browne will be expecting his side to pick up the points against the Red Hand ladies who so far this season have lost to Monaghan, Kerry, and most recently Galway last Sunday who were 4-15 to 1-6 winners. Last weekend a penalty save by Aisling Tarpey from Nicole Owens inside the first minute set up the rest of the game, where Mayo looked composed and confident throughout. Staunton kicked a brace early to put Mayo two to the good and they never once fell behind in the game. Staunton went on to kick seven points in the opening half, with Rachel Kearns chipping in with one as Mayo went in leading by 0-8 to 0-3 at the break.
It was more of the same in the second half, with Mayo shutting down the Dublin attack throughout and Staunton keeping the scoreboard kicking over keeping Dublin's challenge at bay.
