Mayo Community Games prepare for new season

Mayo Community Games are making preparations for the year ahead with the hope that all of last year’s registered areas, and a number of new areas will join up this year. Affiliation forms and fees are now due to be returned to the county secretary. Entries for the following competitions are now required in order to get the competitions started: badminton, basketball, chess, draughts, futsal, indoor soccer, and spike ball.

A new online registration system is been introduced this year by National Community Games for all areas in the country. Training for secretaries in Mayo has been arranged. The new system will replace panel sheets and will involve putting in players names, date of birth, addresses and their event online. Signatures are no longer required. Strict deadlines will be enforced on closing dates by National Community Games.

The handwriting, art, and model making competitions will take place on Saturday, March 7 in Breaffy National School, Castlebar. The u14 quiz competition will take place on Friday, April 10 at 7.30pm in the Welcome inn Hotel Castlebar. The Mayo Community Games track and field athletic finals will take place in Claremorris on Sunday June 21. The closing date for entries is Tuesday May 19. The HSE Connacht Community Games will be hosted by Sligo this year and will take place on Saturday and Sunday, July 4 and 5 .The HSE National Community Games Finals in Athlone will take place over two weekends over the weekend of August 14 to 16 and August 21 to 23. The annual church gate collection for all areas will be taken up on Saturday and Sunday April 4 and 5, and permits will be sent out nearer the date.

The provincial draw this year will see Connaught competitors take on Leinster. At the national finals in August, a Mayo competitor will carry the torch this year at the opening ceremony.

The Community Games 44th Annual General Meeting will take place in the Mount Errigal Hotel , Letterkenny from the 20th -21st February. The Mayo Community Games secretary, Gerry McGuinness, has been nominated to contest the election for a 17 member board of directors to govern National Community Games during 2015.
