Spring Leagues bring out the best around Mayo

Balla

PJ Brett was the winner of the gents’ competition last weekend with a score of 39pts. He finished one point in front of Matt Leonard who came home in second place. Third spot went to Lorcan Cribben, who also came home with a score of 38pts. The ladies’ competition was won by Carmel Henry who scored 39pts, Louise McMahon finished in second place three points further back, with Pauline O’Connor taking third place.

Ballina

Nine teams braved the elements last Sunday for the first round of the Spring League. The best score on the day went to the team of Frances Burke, Kathy Foley and Susan Graham who scored 44.1 for the trio. The second placed team was the threesome of Marie Forde, Joan Clancy and Helena McLoughlin, with the third place going to Josephine O’Hara, Eimer O’Halloran and Vera Sweeney. The next round of the competition

takes place on Sunday.

Ballinrobe

Sheila Molloy was the winner of the final round of the ladies’ Winter Alliance competition when she came home with the a score of 41pt. Maura Joyce came home in second place three points behind, with Ailish Gleeson coming home in third place, and Joanne Hynes finishing in fourth spot. The overall prize went to the team of Aine Melville, Kathleen Collier, Eileen Comer, and Martina Cummins. Second place was taken by Maura Joyce, Maria Burke, Brid De Barra, and Chris Moran.

The gents’ Harry Walsh Classic overall win was claimed by the team of Peter Flaherty, William Kavangh, David Robertson and Brendan King. Second place went to Denis Conroy, Simon Smith, Michael Divilly and Ian Reilly. The foursome of Christopher Mellett, Felim Reilly, Brendan O’Toole and Aidan Golden came home in third place.

Castlebar

The penultimate round of the gents’ Spring League last weekend was won by Gerry Needham’s team who scored a total of 90pts. The singles’ competition was won by Brian Healy who came home with a score of 33pts, with Mark Corrigan taking second place a point further back. The ladies’ competition was won by Breda Gilvarry who scored 29pts, with Breege Flynn and Anne O’Sullivan following her home with both scoring 27pts. Next weekend includes an open weekend memorial competition in memory of Padraig Hurst.

Claremorris

It was week three of the Spring League last weekend, and Eamon Doherty took home the win with a score of 34pts. Declan Lambe finished in second place and Tadg Mullen came home in third place. The ladies’ competition was won by Riana Kean.

Mulranny

The latest open weekend qualifier was well supported with good conditions for play on Saturday. Michael Fallon was the winner with a score of 37pts, Richard Keane finished in second place one point further behind, and Collette Flemming finished in third place on 35pts. Richard and Collette now join the list of qualifiers for the grand final which will take place on Saturday, April 11. Existing and new members are reminded the annual membership is now due.

Swinford

In last weekend’s third round of the Winter League the duo of Mick Doyle and Peter Moore were the winners with a score of 20pts. Second place went to Declan Munnelly and Ron Howko a point further behind, and Danny Lambe and Ger O’Keeffe finished in third place. The leaders after three rounds are the duo of Munnelly and Howko. The ladies’ nine hole competition was won by Dympna O’Donnell with a score of 19pts. Catherine Loftus finished in second place with a score of 17pts.

Westport

In last weekend’s senior competition Brendan Burns was the winner with a score of 31pts. Teddy Walsh finished in second three points back, and Des Mahon came home in third place. The category prizes saw John Kelly win category one, Brendan Murphy category two, and Liam Walsh was the category three winner.
