Local music promotor Finbar Hoban is bringing Irish singer and songwriter Declan O’Rourke to Garbos venue in Castlebar on Friday February 27 for what promises to be a very intimate show with the acclaimed crooner.
Over the years, Declan O’Rourke, best known to many for his song ‘Galileo’, has been a smash hit with the critics and fans in Ireland and abroad for his songwriting skills, singing and mesmerising performances, since his debut 2004 album Since Kyabram opened at number five in the Irish charts.
The album went on to score double platinum sales and earned O’Rourke three Meteor Award nominations, for Best Male, Best Album, and Best Folk/Traditional Album.
The album’s success confirmed O’Rourke as one of the leading lights on the Irish singer and songwriting scene and opened his music up to an international audience.
Paul Weller is a firm fan. In 2012, speaking to Mojo Magazine, he described ‘Galileo’ as “possibly the greatest song written in the last 30 years”. Writing in the New York Times, Jon Pareles has said O’Rourke’s calling is as a balladeer and there is virtuosity in his guitar playing.
A consummate and versatile performer, O’Rourke’s songs mesmerise, regardless of whether they are performed solo, with a band, string quartet, orchestra, or as a trio.
He has played for three Irish Presidents and the King and Queen of Sweden (with Peter Jöback ).
He appeared on two seasons of the popular music show Other Voices, as well as season five of BBC’s Transatlantic Session alongside Alison Krauss and Amos Lee.
He has guested with New Zealand indie-sensation Bic Runga, and the multi-platinum alternative rock group Snow Patrol throughout Europe, including at London’s Wembley Arena. O’Rourke has also performed at such festivals as Glastonbury, Oxygen, Electric Picnic, the Cannes Film Festival, Latitude, Cois Fharraige, and SXSW.
Catch Declan O’Rourke when he will perform with support from Verse Chorus Verse at Garbos venue in Castlebar on February 27.
Tickets are now on sale from Downtown Records and Hogs Heaven and cost just €20.
