IMPACT trade union will host an information meeting for secretaries and receptionists working in GP practises in the region. The meeting takes place at the Connacht Hotel, Dublin Road, Galway on Wednesday February 25 at 7:30pm.
IMPACT official Sophia O’Reilly explained that the meeting is part of an initiative to encourage GP secretaries and receptionists to join a union. “IMPACT has very recently started to attract members from this area of work. For many, it’s an opportunity to make a connection with other secretaries and receptionists working in GP practises and medical centres.
“They tend to be quite small workplaces, many are working alone, and joining a union provides plenty of support and professional representation if there are problems at work. Being part of a union means their employment conditions can be improved and protected. It gives these workers a stronger voice in the workplace” she said.
She said the union offers training on employment rights, interview techniques and health and safety among others.
Ms O’Reilly added “We offer advice and information on rights at work, support when people need it, such as going through grievance procedures or dealing with dignity at work issues.”
The information meeting is open to all GP secretaries and receptionists working in the Galway area.
“The meeting will be an opportunity for people to find out more, to ask questions, to meet others in their line of work and find out more what union membership would mean to them,” she added.
