Live register almost doubles for those under twenty five - Kenny

Fine Gael Leader Enda Kenny TD is disappointed that the live register has almost doubled for those under 25 years of age in Co Mayo. The increase from December 2007 to December 2008 is 97.6 per cent, jumping from 929 people to 1,836 people.

“This increase is one of the most worrying in Mayo and shows how badly the county is being affected by the economic climate,” said Deputy Kenny.

The overall live register figure for the county has increased by 72.8 per cent, from 5,089 in December 2007 up to 8,792 in December 2008. These figures were compiled by the Central Statistics Office and show how unemployment levels are increasing dramatically in the county.

Dep Kenny said: “These figures are further evidence of the Government’s neglect and inability to change the current economic circumstances. The Government has failed Co Mayo and appears to be making no effort to protect the county and reverse these recent trends.”
