The elected members of Mayo County Council paid tribute at their February meeting last Monday to the recently deceased Sean Hannick and Peggy Cruise.
Paying tribute to the late Mr Hannick, who was a well known community activist in Killala, Cllr Annie May Reape said: “Everyone knew Sean, there was a great warmth in him and he was a great leader, who was determined to do all he could for his area. He was very passionate about Killala and did great work, but never in it for the limelight.” Cllr Jarlath Munnelly said Sean showed “great loyalty to his people, his community and the county at large. He was a giant amongst men and his commitment to Killala and north Mayo in general was unimaginable.”
The members also paid tribute to the late Mrs Peggy Cruise, the mother of Fine Gael Cllr Neil Cruise from Foxford. Mrs Cruise who was a native of Knockbrack in Ballyhaunis was a former school teacher. Cllr John Cribben said: “She was a great teacher who taught in many schools throughout the locality and touched a number of people’s lives through her work.”
The council agreed to adjourn their meeting at 5pm on Monday as a mark of respect to both of the recently deceased.
