A public lighting contractor will be on site next week on the Newport Road outside Castlebar to start works there.
When the works are finished, the lights will extend from the 50km zone on the Newport Road to the 60km zone at Lough Mallard.
An Taoiseach Enda Kenny announced €450,000 in funding for upgrades to the section of road last Thursday.
Mr Kenny said this week that work is to commence on the project “within days”.
“This is a welcome development and represents only part of the upgrades taking place,” outlined Mr Kenny.
“The contract for the footpath and road paving works in the same location will be awarded in the coming weeks and will include safety measures to encourage traffic to observe speed limits. This will create a safe environment for both residents and road users. It will also create a better environment for both walkers and cyclists.”
