Castlebar Celtic will take on league leaders Wexford Youths in the latest round of action in the Continental Tyres Women’s National League at 7pm on Saturday evening. Celtic are currently sitting in fifth place in the seven team division, 16 points behind their opponents for tomorrow night.
In their last outing, having had a bye in the last weekend’s round of the league, Celtic were held to a 2-2 draw in Celtic Park against local rivals Galway WFC. Celtic needed a last minute spot kick from Aoife Herbert to grab a point after Galway WFC twice had gone into the lead. Ruth Fahy opened the scoring for the Tribeswomen just before the half hour, but Celtic levelled things up just before the break when Emma Hansberry drove the ball to the back of the net.
Celtic keeper Aoife Brennan had to be on the top of her game in the second half to keep Galway WFC at bay, but her resistance was finally broken when Lynsey McKey put the visitors back into the lead. But Celtic kept battling and Herbert held her nerve from the penalty spot as the game ticked into injury time to rescue a point for Celtic.
This will be the third meeting of Celtic and Wexford Youths in this season’s league, with Wexford Youths picking up three points from their last visit to Celtic Park in August with a 2-1 win, while they also ran out 3-1 winners in Ferrycarig Park in November.
