There was a major boost for Mayo on the jobs front yesterday evening (Thursday ) with news that the HSE is to fill 106 posts across the county.
Making the welcome jobs announcement, An Taoiseach Enda Kenny also revealed funding of €750,000 has been sanctioned for two projects in Castlebar - at the Newline and on the Newport Road R311 at Rehins Wood.
The HSE jobs announcement involves 56 vacant posts which are to be filled and an additional 50 new posts being created.
The jobs are across a wide range of disciplines including staff nurses, clinical nurse managers, care workers, occupational therapists and two consultant psychiatrists and will be distributed across the county.
“This is good for the health services of the county,” said Mr Kenny. “We will continue to work to improve all areas of the health service. It is an ongoing job which both myself and Minister Varadkar are very focused on.”
Mr Kenny announced €300,000 has been allocated to carry out works on the street at the Newline in Castlebar, which has been a problem area in the town for over 50 years.
“I am delighted that it will finally be rectified,” said Mr Kenny. “I remember it myself as a child and the fact that we now have €300,000 allocated to carry out works on the street is a very welcome development.
“The works should make Castlebar a better town to travel around and Castlebar has waited a long, long time for this street to be upgraded.”
Mr Kenny said the funding is a very positive boost for the town in the same week that the tenders for the new €12.5 million National Outdoor Pursuits Centre opened.
The project on the Newport Road will see €450,000 invested in completing the upgrade of the road and cycle path to Rehins Wood.
“This is part of a larger, ongoing plan to link Castlebar to the Great Western Greenway,” said Mr Kenny.
“This is good for tourism and makes the fantastic amenity at Rehins Wood very accessible to all.
“Again, this is part of a number of recent positive announcements for both Castlebar and Mayo.
“I will continue to work as hard as I can, both as Taoiseach, and the people of Mayo’s representative.”
Welcoming the announcements, Sylvester Jennings, president of Castlebar Chamber of Commerce, said it will be a fantastic development for Castlebar to see the Newline area of the town upgraded and regenerated.
“An investment like this into the town is always good news, particularly at the Newline, which has been an ongoing problem. Castlebar Chamber warmly welcomes this news.
“Likewise, the plans to upgrade the road and cycle path on the Newport Road to Rehins Wood. This has great potential to develop Castlebar’s tourism offering and enhance the recreational facilities for locals and visitors alike.”
