A man in his late 30s, arrested in Ballina last night in connection with a garda investigation into a suspected petrol bomb attack on Fine Gael Deputy Michelle Mulherin's office on John Street, was released from garda custody at 1.40am this morning.
The man was released without charge and gardaí in Ballina said this morning that they are continuing their investigations into the matter.
In a statement released by Deputy Mulherin following the incident, the Ballina representative said she was thankful noone had been injured.
“I await the outcome of the Garda investigation and will be making no further comment at this stage,” she stated.
Deputy Mulherin grabbed national headlines earlier this week when it emerged she ran-up a bill of €2,000 worth of calls from Leinster House to a mobile phone number in Kenya between 2011 and 2013.
The Irish Times reported that Deputy Mulherin has repaid the €2,000.
Deputy Mulherin stressed that the calls were not of a personal nature.
