A Claremorris man who was found to have been driving while disqualified was given a two months’ prison sentence, which was suspended for 12 months, and was disqualified from driving for two years, in Castlebar District Court this week.
Garda Jason Lardner told the court he stopped a car being driven by Dainius Astraukas who has an address at 1 Grattan Crescent, Grattan Park, Claremorris on May 29, 2014 at 12.50pm on Kilcolman Road, Claremorris. He demanded the production of Astraukas’ driving licence and certificate of insurance within 10 days. Astraukas produced a certificate of insurance that covered him for the date in question, but failed to produce his driving licence. Following further investigations by the gardai it transpired that Astraukas had been disqualified from driving for two years, with the disqualification running form November 28, 2013 to November 28, 2015, making the insurance policy he had taken out invalid.
Judge James Faughnan took a charge of no insurance into consideration, convicted him of driving without a licence, and sentenced him to two months in prison, suspended for 12 months, and disqualified him from driving for another two years.
