New farming body set up

The chairperson of the Connemara branch of the Irish Farmers Organisation has resigned.

Speaking to RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta on Tuesday, Brendan Joyce said a new organisation is to set-up in the next six weeks to represent small farmers.

“We decided we might be better ... making our own case ... going directly to the decision makers in this area, and other areas, as opposed to going through another group,” said Mr Joyce.

Mr Joyce said there is currently no farming organisation to represent the particular interests and challenges of small farmers in rural areas.
