Cong’s Wilde connection to be explored

The village of Cong is marking its connection to one of the most famous writers of the 19th century - Oscar Wilde.

Oscar Wilde’s parents had a home at Moytura, near Cong, and the Wilde family spent long periods at their country house there.

Oscar Wilde often wrote about his experiences in Cong and frequently returned to the area throughout his life.

Cong Moytura Heritage Society is now hosting an illustrated talk about the fascinating life and times of Oscar Wilde’s father, Sir William Wilde.

The free talk takes place at 8.30pm on Wednesday January 21, in the Crossroads Community Centre, Cong.

Sir William, born 200 years ago near Castlerea, was a surgeon, antiquarian, and noted amateur archaeologist.

He is best remembered locally for his book about Lough Corrib and Lough Mask, published in 1867, which gives an instructive account of the history and archaeology of the area.

The talk will explore Sir William Wilde’s interesting life and career and his connections to Mayo.

Admission to the talk is free and refreshments will be served.
