State to dispose of ‘realistic imitation firearm’

A realistic imitation firearm, which a man was using to shoot bottles on the green area of a Castlebar estate last March, has been forfeited to the State for destruction.

Sergeant Regina Carley made the application for the forfeiture of the imitation firearm at Castlebar District Court on Wednesday.

Sgt Carley told the court Danius Sprangalis, 31 Clareville, Claremorris, was shooting bottles on the green area at Liosbain with a 6mm calibre air gun on March 4 last at 7.20pm.

A nine-year-old child in the estate became frightened and the child’s father reported the matter to gardaí.

Sprangalis told gardaí he had not meant to frighten the child.

A ballistics examination of the air rifle, which does not require a licence, deemed it to be a realistic imitation firearm.

Judge Kevin Kilraine granted the application for the disposal of the property.
