Mayo bow out of Oscar Traynor trophy

The Mayo League’s interest in this season’s Oscar Traynor Trophy came to an end in a wet Eamon Deacy Park in Galway on Sunday afternoon, when they were seen off by the Galway League with three goals to spare.

It looked as if things were going as planned for Mayo when Pat Fitzgerald put Mayo in front after just 20 minutes with a great strike, but the hosts hit back with three goals in the final 30 minutes to book their place in the knock-out stages of the competition alongside group winners the Roscommon League.

Mayo’s dreams of progress was dented when Keith Ward found the back of Stephen Cafferkey’s net from the penalty spot after

the kick was awarded in controversial circumstances. Five minutes later former Salthill Devon man Oscar Sibanda put the home side

in front and with four minutes to go Colm O’Donovan made it 3-1 and put the full stop on Mayo’s involvement in this year’s competition.
