Singer and former Voice of Ireland judge Sharon Corr has called on local shoppers to support the Oxfam shop in Castlebar by buying ‘gifts that give back’ this Christmas.
Ms Corr, an Oxfam ambassador, said women’s rights is an issue that is very close to her heart and she witnessed the charity’s work with women in developing countries first hand during a recent trip to Tanzania.
“[It] was a truly life-changing and inspirational experience,” said Ms Corr.
“It reinforced for me the power of women to change the world and how Oxfam’s work is helping women effect real change, for the good of their family and community.”
Ms Corr urged shoppers to remember those less fortunate this Christmas and consider picking up some gifts in their local Oxfam shop.
“The Oxfam shop in Castlebar in Co Mayo offers a wide-range of gifts that give back, making a significant difference in the lives of families and communities through the charity’s long-term development projects, as well as for those caught up in emergency situations across the world,” she said.
“When you support a woman to lift herself and her family out of poverty, you help a whole community. Women’s skills, resilience, determination, and ingenuity are invaluable – but greatly underused – resources to overcoming poverty.”
Gifts available from the Oxfam shop in Castlebar include the ‘Educate a Girl’ gift card, refurbished iPads and brand new Christmas products, which make ideal stocking fillers.
