Big thrill seekers fly in for Erris waves

Two of the best known kitesurfers in the world of extreme watersports boarded a plane in South Africa and headed straight to north Mayo last week when their tide and chart watching predicted it would be the number one spot on the planet for catching big waves and wind.

Red Bull athletes, Ruben Lenten and Kevin Langeree, are making a new film called Chapter One, showcasing the best destinations in the world for kiteboarding and water sports.

Mayo now looks set to feature in the Chapter One film after Lenten, Langeree, their film crew and support team spent four days in the Ice House in Ballina and took on extreme high winds and giant waves along the wild Erris and Achill coastlines.

Mayo County Council extended a very warm welcome to the Dutch adventurers as they are exactly the type of high profile thrill seeker the authority is targeting in its bid to market Mayo as the ‘adventure capital’ of Ireland and the ‘heartbeat of the Wild Atlantic Way’.

“The Red Bull brand and the Erris region should be synonymous with each other,” said Joanne Grehan, head of enterprise and investment with Mayo County Council

“Both evoke wild adventure and we are working hard to ensure Mayo is home to Ireland’s and the world’s most extreme sports professionals.”

Chapter One will be released in 2015.
