Council expects to start building houses again next year

Mayo County Council is ready and waiting to restart the building of new social housing units.

Senior architect with Mayo County Council, Geeta Keena, said the authority anticipates it will receive a funding allocation in January for a building programme, and construction work in areas with the greatest housing needs could begin by the third quarter of the year.

The first units would then be available by early 2016.

Mayo County Council’s social housing construction programme was delivering 150 units annually at its peak in 2007. However, the programme all but ground to a halt over seven successive years of cuts.

“We don’t yet know what capital funding will be available so we won’t know how many units we can provide but we anticipate that we will have a buiding programme next year,” said Ms Keena.
