Minister of State Michael Ring this week announced the approval of the contract documents submitted by Mayo County Council for the swimming pool element of the National Outdoor Educational Training Centre and sports facilities in Castlebar. This approval will allow Mayo County Council to proceed to tender for the works proposed. A grant of €3.8 million is available from Minister Ring’s Department towards this part of the project.
The first phase of the project will consist of the construction of a swimming pool and leisure complex and a linked outdoor pursuits and educational academy along the shores of Lough Lannagh. Speaking this week, Minister Ring said: "I am delighted to be in a position to approve this project to proceed to the next stage of the pool programme. These facilities will greatly enhance the leisure facilities for the people of Castlebar and the surrounding areas. The commitment of Mayo County Council and the local community to this project is to be applauded. This project is a priority of An Taoiseach Enda Kenny and it is a project we have both been working on for some time.”
