Gardai in Castlebar yesterday afternoon (Thursday ) confirmed that explosive experts from the Army removed a suspicious device from a patch of waste ground near An Sportlann in Castlebar.
Gardai had sealed off a large area of ground around An Sportlann in Castlebar after the device was found yesterday morning morning. The device was found on waste ground at the rear of the driving test centre which is located beside An Sportlann. A number of buildings in the area were evacuated at 11am as a precaution. The Army explosives experts arrived around lunchtime, and by 2pm they had removed the device and brought it with them for further investigation and the cordon was lifted by the Gardai.
Gardai had sealed off an area from in front the driving test centre, around the back of An Sportlann, and up to the gates that are used to access the car park at the rear of the facility, beside the entrance to MacHale Park.
