Davitt College’s is celebrating a milestone anniversary this year.
The school has been staging musicals for 30 years now and the big 30th anniversary production will be the smash hit rock extravaganza, Don’t Stop Believin’.
The musical will be staged in the Joe Langan Sports Hall, which will be transformed into a theatre and auditorium with professional sound and lighting production and a purpose built stage and sets.
“In recent years we have played to capacity audiences each night,” explained Bernie Rowland, principal at the school. “Our new venue will prove to be more comfortable and will cater to bigger audiences.”
Over the past 30 years, Davitt College has gained a deserved reputation for staging exceptional and hugely entertaining shows. The school has brought some of the world’s most popular musicals to Castlebar, including Jesus Christ Superstar, Guys and Dolls, and All Shook Up.
The musicals have always been very well supported by the local community in Castlebar and beyond, with large audiences from throughout the county, ensuring sell-out shows, year after year.
The school musical is a transition year module in Davitt College and the students are at the heart of the production, according to Ms Rowland.
“Their energy and passion is inspirational each year. I am always very impressed by the huge amount of talent displayed and how very hard the students work to ensure top class performances.”
This year will be no exception, with a record number of students taking part.
“The singers and dancers are all transition year students,” said Eamonn Mulderrig, musical director. “Then we have a cross-section of musicians, including some All Ireland champions, supporting in the pit.”
“The talent this year is exceptional,” added David Nevin, musical producer. “All of the students are highly motivated and have worked tirelessly over the past number of weeks.”
The Davitt College production is the Irish schools premiere of the smash hit musical and includes all of the classic stadium rock tunes of the 1980s, including ‘Thunderstruck’, ‘Paradise City’, ‘Here I Go Again’, and ‘Don’t Stop Believing’.
Don’t Stop Believin’ will be staged on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, November 26, 27, and 28 at Davitt College.
Tickets are available from the school or by calling (094 ) 9023060.
