Last month marked the 11th anniversary of the Outwest helpline operating in the western region. This friendly and confidential service emerged 11 years ago after the Outwest group recognised a need for a listening ear to assist the LGBT community of the greater western area with their fears and concerns surrounding their own sexuality. The helpline has also has become a source of comfort and reassurance for concerned friends and family of LGBT people in the west.
Since September 2003 the helpline has grown year on year and is now a branch of the national LGBT helpline network. All volunteers have undergone extensive training and volunteer their time to offer a non judgmental, listening ear.
The Outwest branch of the national LGBT helpline operates on Thursdays from 8pm to 10pm and can be reached on 1890 929 539, and the national LGBT helpline can also be contacted Monday to Thursday, from 6.30pm to 9pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 4pm to 6pm on 1890 929 539. Outwest also offers social evenings, scenic guided walks, and sexual health information to the LGBT community each year.
